Motor Oil Information: Any AUTOMOTIVE SERVICE ESTABLISHMENT that sells at least 500 gallons per year of new oil and performs vehicle servicing must accept from the public at no charge up to 5 gallons of used oil per person, per day. RETAILERS that do not service vehicles but sell at least 1,000 gallons per year of new oil must also accept used oil from the public. As the state requires these retail outlets to accept used motor oil, it cannot be accepted at household hazardous waste (HHW) collections.
The ecopark will, however, accept any motor oil that is mixed with gasoline or otherwise contaminated--appointment required.
General Automotive Information: Automotive care items (ranging from batteries, fluids, fuel, cleaners and waxes) have a variety of options for recycling or proper disposal. NYS law requires service stations that change oil and certain major oil retailers to accept used motor from residents. Similarly, vehicle batteries must also be accepted by retailers (conditions apply). Automotive fluids such as brake, power steering, and transmission fluids; antifreeze, gasoline, diesel, and gas/oil mixes; cleaners and waxes will be accepted at Monroe County's HHW facility at the ecopark; appointment required.
