NYS Lead Wheel Weights Prohibition: NYS Law passed 9/17/2010 which established prohibition of both the sale and use of wheel weights containing lead. As of 4/1/2011: wheel weights or other wheel balancing products with greater than 0.1 percent lead by weight are prohibited from being sold or distributed. After 4/1/2012, a person cannot sell a motor vehicle that is equipped with a wheel weight or other wheel balancing product that contains more than 0.1 percent lead by weight.

General Automotive Information: Automotive care items (ranging from batteries, fluids, fuel, cleaners and waxes) have a variety of options for recycling or proper disposal. NYS law requires service stations that change oil and certain major oil retailers to accept used motor from residents. Similarly, vehicle batteries must also be accepted by retailers (conditions apply). Automotive fluids such as brake, power steering, and transmission fluids; antifreeze, gasoline, diesel, and gas/oil mixes; cleaners and waxes will be accepted at Monroe County's HHW facility at the ecopark; appointment required.
