Public Water Systems

Program Goals

To minimize potential health hazards from contamination of public water supplies by enforcement of Part 5, Subpart 5-1 of the New York State Sanitary Code.

Program Highlights

• Conduct inspections of public water supply sources and issue written reports.
• Surveillance sampling of community water systems for compliance with the Part 5 requirements of the NYS Sanitary Code.
• Perform compliance sampling of non-community water systems.
• Respond to complaints and conduct investigations.
• Review and approve water distribution system plans and specifications following the latest edition of the “Recommended Standards For Water Works” (10 State Standards) for the State Commissioner of Health.
• Sample new water mains and approve their use prior to placing the water main into operation.
• Issue Approvals of Completed Works under the provisions of Part 5 of the New York State Sanitary Code.
• Approve water system operators as per Subpart 5-4.
• Perform enforcement actions as necessary.

Water Supply Reports for Monroe County Suppliers

There are three producers of public drinking water within Monroe County.  As required by law, all water suppliers within Monroe County publish an Annual Water Quality Report (AWQR). The AWQR answers many of the questions you may have about your water.  AWQR's are available by clicking on the links below:

• Monroe County Water Authority (MCWA)
• City of Rochester Bureau of Water and Lighting
• Village of Webster

In addition, some areas of the county purchase water from MCWA for re-sale to their customers:

• Village of Brockport
• Village of Hilton
• Seabreeze WD (a community within Irondequoit)

Bulk and Bottled Water

• Perform surveillance sampling.
• Review plant operational reports.
• Respond to complaints and conduct investigations.
• Perform enforcement actions as necessary.
