Description of Duties

This is a senior-level technical position responsible for supervising and participating in the analysis of water, food, soil, wastewater, and other sample matrices, in a laboratory, satellite laboratory, or test site.  Duties include performing chemical and bacteriological analyses of samples, operating automated equipment, and utilizing analytical equipment to perform analyses.  This position differs from Environmental Chemist II by virtue of the more complex analyses of samples performed and general supervisory responsibility.  The employee reports directly to, and works under the general supervision of a higher-level staff member.  General supervision is exercised over Environmental Chemist II’s & III’s.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must meet the following minimum requirements on or before the date of the written exam: 

Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma, plus EITHER:

  1. Graduation with a  Master’s degree in a natural science* including successful completion of at least twenty-four (24) college semester credit hours** in Chemistry, plus one (1) year paid full-time or its part-time equivalent***  experience in laboratory testing, examination, and/or analysis in an environmental laboratory; OR,
  2. Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree in a natural science* including successful completion of at least twenty-four (24) college semester credit hours** in Chemistry, plus three (3) years paid full-time or its part-time equivalent***  experience as defined in (A) above, two (2) of which must have been in an environmental laboratory; OR,
  3. An equivalent combination of education** and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B) above.

*Natural sciences includes Biology, Botany, Chemistry, Earth Science, Physics, and Zoology and their subsets.

**Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications above must submit, at the time of application, a student or official copy of a college transcript or itemized list of course work and credits received.
