STOP DWI Program

Since 1982, the Monroe County STOP-DWI Program has served to educate the community regarding the dangers of impaired driving and provide funding to groups and organizations engaged in activities related to alcohol and other drug-related traffic safety. STOP-DWI is supported 100% by local fines collected from intoxicated drivers.

Monroe County has the highest DWI (Driving While Intoxicated) conviction percentage among the large counties in New York State."This is a crime of choice,” said Peggy Duffy, “We are an educated society. People know that driving under the influence can kill, so when they make the choice to get behind the wheel of a car intoxicated, they should be held accountable.”We want to heighten awareness to the issue of DWI, so that the community remembers that drunk driving is a random act of violence and can be prevented.

Monroe County STOP-DWI supports:

  • Rochester Against Intoxicated Driving (RAID)
  • Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD)
  • Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD)
  • Finger Lakes Collegiate Task Force
  • Monroe County Office of Traffic Safety
  • Monroe County / City of Rochester Coalition for Crime Victims

Wall of Tribute

In memory and in honor of those who have been injured or killed by impaired drivers, a DWI Wall of Tribute has been developed with pictures and descriptions of the events affecting the individuals. It is portable and has been on display in local malls, businesses and high schools since February, 1998.

A mini wall has also been developed and is available for your school or community group event. In the near future, the original wall will have a permanent home in the new Public Safety location.

This is an ongoing project so if you would like to have your loved ones picture or information about an alcohol or other drug-related crash added, feel free to contact us. Please call 585 753-3011 for details about the wall.

The Wall of Tribute is co-sponsored by Monroe County STOP DWI and the DWI Victim Advocacy Program.
